"...Uh. ...Sorry. ...I didn't mean to break that door...": A whole lot of duck tape and super glue
Believe it or not, Mara Free wasn't always Mara Free. ...She also wasn't always female. ...Or a robot.
As knowledge of the supernatural started to spread across the world, so did certain desires, plots, and plans... not all of which are technically considered 'moral'. ...or even 'legal'. One example of such a person was Madame Mara, CEO and founder of Madame's Tech Incorporated. She was growing old, and she... well. She didn't like it. She wanted to be young again, to live forever -- and she wanted a sure-fire way to do so. The normal thought, a Dryad Fruit, was forgotten given her desire to live. ...So, she opted to work on something else. A robot body. And, using magic, finding a way to implant her very soul into said body.
The transfer was actually surprisingly easy... it took a bit of work, sure, but with enough money to bribe the researchers, she managed to come up with a way to force a 'soul' from a dead body into something else, as a form of possession. The robot body, however, was... significantly harder. The first countless attempts failed. Sometimes the body didn't work. Sometimes the code wasn't conductive to holding a true free will. Sometimes, the code wasn't strict enough to hold the soul in the first place, and it would escape in a few moments.
Countless dollars, and far too many lives later, came the robot with the serial code 'N3 -- UU -- L1', with the model number 'F3'. This one, worked. And the poor sap that was killed as a proof a concept? A young man called Mark. He was kidnapped off the street, placed into the circle... and killed. After a moment of shock, surprise, no little amount of pain, and a desperate desire to SURVIVE, he found himself in a body designed after Madame Mara in her younger days.
What nobody could know was that a key portion that allowed it to work this time... was Mark's desire to live. Not that it mattered to Madame Mara, who was instantly out to reboot Mark, erasing his 'soul', so they could do the ritual again... this time, for herself. Shame that the police had been noticing the rash of missing people that Mara had been kidnapping and killed, and busted in at that EXACT moment, saving Mark from an untimely demise.
Mark can push past her body's programming with a certain amount of willpower... the more tired she gets, the more robotic she behaves. Further, there are some things that she has a VERY hard time pushing back. Her body's name in her code is 'Mara F3' -- named after her creator and her model number. And that's what she had to use to refer to herself, both when speaking... and when thinking. She could adjust it a certain extent, to 'Mara Free', but no further. There is more 'legacy code' in her 'brain' that alters her behavior somewhat, but for the most part she manages to keep it under wraps. ...Especially since Madame's Tech Incorporated still stands by the 'fact' that she is 'their property'. The lawsuits following that, and the needs of her new body, made her almost broke...
