Equipment
Black Leather Jacket (+2 Armor, 1 Stress) (Gold-Hearted Bad Girl): Originally a birthday gift from freshman year, Serena has always worn her signature, studded black leather jacket. Well-worn with age and use, the owner has had the interior material replaced with kevlar, giving it a stiffer, but more protective form. It probably couldn’t stop a 5.56 rifle round, but it’s better than nothing.
Serena’s Switchblade (+2 WR) (No Patience For Pleasantries): A red-handled, well-maintained switchblade. Despite being styled after the 50’s era, all of the parts are of high-quality design and steel.
Smart Phone (Fix Your Mistakes): A fairly average, unremarkable smartphone with a magenta case emblazoned with a two-toned, stylized sun. Serena’s had the same phone since high school, and it’s yet to give her any problems. At least, after she jailbroke the software and started messing with it’s programming.
The Siren’s Song (+2 to acquiring illegal goods) (The Siren’s Song): The last parting gift from Sundown’s second in command and closest friend, many far and wide know of The Siren’s Song; a large ruby hung from a necklace of silk. It’s become somewhat of an omen in the criminal underground; if you see The Siren’s Song, odds are you better give whoever’s wearing it what they want. It may have swapped necks, but Serena’s aware of the weight it carries.
Locations and Laws of the Criminal Underground (+2 to finding criminal elements) (Old Friends): The first parting gift from Sundown’s second in command and closest friend, is a small black book easily kept between the interior pockets of Serena’s jacket. In it are a number of contacts, names, organizations, and rules for dealing with said organizations within the criminal underworld. Serena uses it to keep herself under the radar and ensure she’s aware of who not to shove around to keep it that way.
Little Red Book of Charlotte's Secrets (Golden Dawn): A collection of all of the information Serena and her team were able to gather on the Golden Dawn cell in Charlotte. Not really that useful now, but it could have value to someone... or be useful if the worst should happen.
Pack of Smokes (Bad Diplomat): Serena took up smoking during the middle of high school, and has since usually kept a pack of Marlboro ‘cowboy killers’ on her at all times. She’s cut back quite a bit, but the ability to ward off someone with a puff of harsh smoke to the face is as useful to her as the actual nicotine in them.
Facility
Sundown’s Hideout
Having found a place to settle down and lay low, Serena’s current haunt is a small apartment located in a quieter part of town. She keeps the place homey and comfortable, but has a top-of-the-line computer setup to keep tabs with her old friends, and keep an eye on Golden Dawn activity. This gives her a +3 to gathering information on criminal organizations and the status of her former Golden Dawn members.
Background
Before becoming commonly known by the moniker Sundown, Serena Summers was a fairly average single-parent high schooler in a small town outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Sure, her mom was never around... and sure, she got into fights, but Serena Summers was the best, and she made everyone aware of it. Her prowess for academics made classes trivial. She could talk her way out of anything and get people to do whatever she wanted. As far as Serena was concerned, she was the queen.
So what if she had to knock a few heads around, or intimidate her classmates to keep people from crossing her? She had close friends and a silver tongue to keep her free of retaliation. She was invincible!
Yet, as high school drew to a close and people began to talk of college and job opportunities, Serena Summers felt the rare feeling of fear grip her heart. She had built up her reputation in school, sure, but when classes ended and everyone went home, she was just a popular kid with a habit of shoving others around. When she hit college, she’d be stuck clawing her way to the top again.
As senior year rolled around, Serena began to think, and began to plan. Something to keep her on top and give her an edge. With technology advancing, and idea came to her; she could manipulate people easily... so why not manipulate technology?
Two semesters packed full of programming and computer science courses, prepping her for college, flew by Serena. By the time summer rolled around, she had taken to picking up what she could from what she and her friends knew from friends and family. She made sure to keep in contact with all of them, and even ensured she would be enrolling alongside a few of them at the university in Charlotte. The school queen wasn’t about to walk into college without a scrap of reputation to her name!
As summer waned, Summers herself met with her soon-to-be college student friends. Over coffee and notes on classes and degrees, one of them talked about a group interested in people like them; the best of the best. Intrigued, they met went along with their friends’ idea, and it was then, meeting with individuals who called themselves The Golden Dawn, that certain matters became clear to Serena. Her mother had born a succubus child, and the nature of what Serena was was made clear.
What followed was two years of Serena and her long-time friends making use of their skills for the Golden Dawn cell in Charlotte. Manipulating human traffickers and drug cartels, playing people against one another, and doing what they assumed was the right thing. After all, they were playing Charlotte’s criminal underbelly against itself. Stopping drug trades, helping the Golden Dawn save people taken from their lives. Corrupt business owners would find their accounts drained, or their goods lost due to their employees convinced of changes in schedules and hand-offs.
Rumors began to circulate of their exploits. The lowlifes and thugs of Charlotte spoke in hushed whispers of a new gang on the rise, lead by someone they knew only as Sundown. A leader who lead their crew personally, and struck just as the sun began to set. Accounts of some of the biggest crime bosses in the state hauled off after they found their operations burnt to the ground and states evidence conveniently tipping off Charlotte police.
Serena was at the top of her game, and as ruthless as she and her team were efficient.
Of course, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Master manipulator and apparent succubus or not, there were those who can and had played Serena and her team like a string orchestra. What she thought was the freeing of innocent people by the Golden Dawn was just an operation of their own. Outside of Charlotte, those ‘freed’ were checked over for psychic prowess and non-human lineage, with blood magic rituals being set up for those that fit the bill. Not the ‘Oh, just a small cut on your hand and you can go’ kind either. Full-blown ‘cut out and eat their hearts like an Aztec priest doing their job wrong’ blood magic.
They wanted the theft of life and abilities for themselves. The cell’s casualness about explaining their intentions after so much legwork done by Serena and her team set Sundown’s blood boiling. They explained it as simply as preparing a meal, or writing a paper, requesting the assistance of Serena and her ‘assets’ to aid them in the more intricate details and preparation. This of course amounted to glorified torture. As if they weren’t even members of the Golden Dawn at all, just mercenaries and thugs working for another crime lord.
Things slowly began to click into place in Serena’s mind as the meeting with her ‘retainer’ of the Golden Dawn’s cell went on. Shock and horror were masked beneath thick sunglasses and a strong poker face from two years of work in the criminal underworld. Even then, the discomfort on the faces of what few members had come with Serena was evident. When the meeting was over, and Sundown and her colleagues parted ways with the Golden Dawn to prepare, her team confronted her about the situation.
Serena pulled off her sunglasses, looked each one of her long-time friends and colleagues in the eyes, and explained exactly what they were going to do. Something broke in Serena’s heart at the realization at what she had done, and she intended to right a wrong, no manipulation or personal gain even considered.
As the sun set over Charlotte on the eve of the agreed upon date, Sundown went to work. Serena ordered everyone pull out all the stops. They called in what few members of the Golden Dawn were loyal specifically to Sundown and her crew. The team’s financier armed them with the best mundane and psychic equipment they could afford from the remaining black market dealers they hadn’t destroyed. When the time came, they stormed the Golden Dawn’s Charlotte cell before the first of many bloody rituals could take place. The Golden Dawn’s hold in North Carolina was crippled, innocent people both died and escaped, and Sundown stumbled off into the night with less than half of her original numbers.
From there, Serena Summers used the last of her connections to ensure she and her long-time friends disappeared. She needed to lay low, settle down, and try to put everything behind her. She ensured those that made it out of Charlotte alive were able to do the same. Maybe Serena would try college elsewhere, or get a job in some corporation’s IT department as just another face in a company.
Pretend to be just another young woman in the States, instead of the manipulative mastermind that nearly got a lot of innocent people killed. Yet even as she set everything up and left Charlotte behind, Sundown and her crew planned. They kept in contact as often as they could, and stuck together in small pockets. Only Sundown herself would remain alone, finding refuge with the Community. Even then, Serena Summers kept her ears and equipment up. Just in case. Until then, building her reputation back up at a community college sounded amazing.
Appearance
Serena stands at a height of 5’ even, her body of average build, having just enough skin to hide the toned muscle beneath, but otherwise appear as an attractive, slightly curved young woman. From the top of her head to just below her torso, copper and blonde hair frames a smooth and pale face enhanced by bright teal eyes and full lips. Never mind the slight glint of distended canines, or the occasional flicker of color change in her eyes. Anyone who claims to have seen a pair of angry red lines along her shoulder blades, like old scars, was just seeing things. As far as anyone that isn’t able to sense her true nature is concerned, Serena Summers is just another human girl.
She isn’t, of course, being a succubus that is still far from maturing. Having not known about it most of her life, Serena finds it easy to hid the physical appearances, even without illusions. Her attire varies of course, but usually consists of some form of denim jeans and t-shirt. Regardless, Serena is never without the studded leather jacket from her high school years, or the thick sunglasses that hide her eyes. A ruby amulet is usually seen dangling from her neck; a parting gift from Sundown’s second in command and closest friend.
