APPEARANCE
Grill is ridiculously short, at 4'7", and his stocky dvergar build makes him look stout, even portly. He has a large nose, busy brows, and a square, dark gray beard that extends down to chest level. Grill is bald at the top, and his hair frizzles out in every direction at the sides and back. He typically wears a pair of cargo jeans, work boots, a plain T-shirt, and fingerless gloves, as well as his trademark trenchcoat. This brown coat smells like car grease, and is weighed down with more than fifty pounds worth of nuts, bolts, screws, and engineering tools.
Grill is rarely seen without some sort of smile, be is a sly look, and earnest grin, or a grim smirk. He's just as quick to laugh, whether at a joke or just over the odd circumstances he finds himself in. Grill wobbles as he walks, belying his real agility, and when he isn't actively working, he tends to keep his hands in his pockets, or rolling a fat cigar.
PERSONALITY
Grill's attitude can be summed up in the word "live." "Live and let live," "live with your mistakes," and "don't live to survive" are just a few adages that Grill lives by, even if he's never said them aloud. Whatever happens, Grill keeps on going. He has fun where he can, girds himself through hard times without complaint, and generally lets things pass through him like water. This often makes Grill look apathetic to others. On the other hand, Grill also believes in repaying his mistakes, if somebody asks him too. This is a large part of why Grill has agreed to serve with Avalon, but it's also led him into long strings of "favors" with less savory characters.
Grill is unassuming of others to a fault; he's made a lot of dangerous friends in his past simply because he's too open and carefree to place judgment on others. Combined with his small stature, it also makes Grill rather disarming. While most wouldn't consider Grill a force of personality, it's also hard to consider him a threat. Grill is unassuming, amiable, and laid back. Cutthroats and steel-eyed guards alike relax in his presence--they may not like the dwarf, but most find it hard to really hate him.
HISTORY
Albrecht Hustoff was the son of a dvergar immigrant from Austria, and grew up in one of the almost-habitable neighborhoods of Detroit. While his parents worked hard to support their budding family, Albrecht was too young to have any authority over his brothers and sisters, but too old to be treasured like the baby brother. Albrecht grew up feeling a little detached from his family, even though he still treasured them. Instead, Albrecht often disappeared from home to hang out with other people. Albrecht was never part of any of Detroit's gangs, even if most of his "friends" didn't realize it. Instead, he made friends everywhere by being friendly and making himself useful. To some, Albrecht was the guy who knew the right people to get whatever you need, but he also gained infamy as a his dvergar talents developed--Albrecht became the guy who could fix old equipment, break into old locks and safeboxes, and by the time he was sixteen, he was the guy who could hotwire any ride for his boys.
Though such skills have a wide field of use, on the streets of Detroit, there was only one way for Albrecht to go if he wasn't going to take control of his own life. And sure enough, the dwarf's laid-back attitude saw him slowly becoming entangled in Detroit's underworld. Though Albrecht's talent with machinery was useful, it wasn't respected by his peers. And since he was too small and stiff to be any good as a tough, burglar, or gunner, Albrecht fell into the only role where his size didn't matter; he became the driver. Whether he was picking up other criminals from the scene of the crime or smuggling illicit goods across the city, Albrecht "Grill" Hustoff honed his skills as a driver. When his skill failed, Albrecht made up for it by tinkering with his ride.
Eventually, one of Albrecht's friends decided to move for another city near Vegas, and asked Grill to take him there. While in Vegas, Albrecht made a whole new host of "friends" and favors on a whole new level. It's also where Albrecht first started getting involved with other members of the Community. Soon, Albrecht was taking part in bank heists, corporate espionage, and the drug trade. His range also expanded, taking Grill on trips through America and even further south, to places like Mexico and Brazil. Grill was paid well for his services, but didn't make much use of the money. More than half of it went into maintenance and upgrading his vehicle and toolbox. If any money was leftover after food and shelter, Albrecht sent it to a local charity, to ease his nagging sense of guilt.
Perhaps that's also why Grill's stunts on the job got more ridiculous. During one job of construction sabotage, Albrecht left his van at home, instead opting to spend the whole night modding one of the nearby caterpillars into an escape so ludicrous the entire police department was chewed out by the city's mayor when Grill's team got away. Then there was the time Albrecht picked up an escaped convict in a 19th century biplane. While Grill's antics remained successful, his contacts started to distance themselves from the dwarf. When Grill was finally apprehended by police during a high-speed helicopter/segway chase through a downtown plaza, nobody came to bust him out. One inmate was even paid off to silence Albrecht for knowing too much, and ended up losing three fingers for his troubles.
Albrecht had a long record of suspected criminal operations, but he was never the primary actor, he never took direct action to harm others, and more importantly, most of these associations were never proven. It was not a difficult task for Avalon to legally extract the dwarf from an American prison, with their resources. After a psych evaluation, recruiters for Avalon determined that Albrecht could be rehabilitated into a viable agent. Grill was certainly open to the idea, though he humbly downplayed his own talents. More importantly, Grill had history with several influential companies and nationalities across Central America with ties to international crime; his intelligence was at least as valuable as his skills.
Now Grills waits for his first operation. He isn't sure what to expect, but hey. Everything will be fine... probably. In the mean time, he has tequila.
